Series; Portraits as True Likenesses in the Moonlight
Portraits of True Likenesses in the Moonlight - Handsome portrait from Yoshiiku's intriguing "True Likenesses in the Moonlight" series depicting famous kabuki actors in silhouette. The designs are sometimes referred to as “Moon shadow prints” and represent the dark shadow of the figure cast by the full moon. Some of the actors are shown drinking sake, smoking a pipe, or holding a fan. A scalloped cartouche inset at the top features the actor in a role. Each print is graphically interesting and compelling, and many feature handsome wood grain in the gray silhouette. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has many images from this interesting series in its collection. An unusual portrait format and a great subject for a kabuki enthusiast.
