Kabuki Actors in Ferry Boats, 1823

Comments - Fantastic, five-panel scene of kabuki actors riding in two ferry boats as they pass each other while crossing the water in opposite directions. At far left a beauty who is a monkey trainer holds a pole topped with a hoop while the animal clings to her back. A young boatman beside her uses a bamboo pole to move the craft along. In the center, an older boatman in a blue print kimono looks up with an unhappy frown. In the panel to the right of him, a seated man has a small drum hanging around his neck and wears a red cloth with black feathers over his head. At right, a crouching man smokes a pipe, a yoke across his lap with baskets full of greenery attached to it. A terrific five-panel design with expressive figures and wonderful detail, rare to fine complete.
