Original Edo era Japanese Woodblock Print
Taira no Yoshikado and His Sister, Princess Takiyasha

Comments - Fantastic depiction of the samurai Taira no Yoshikado and his sister, the Princess Takiyasha, gathering at the ruined family mansion with his retainer, the elderly Iga Jutaro, and his allies. After the death of their father, Masakado, in battle against the Minamoto, the pair vowed to avenge his death. Yoshikado sits on a platform at top center, scowling angrily as he grips the edge of an armrest. The beauty stands at left, smiling sweetly as she raises a folding fan behind her head. Iga Jutaro sits at bottom center, wearing a fur vest and chap over a kimono, pants, and armor, a quiver of arrows at his back. He taught the brother and sister toad magic to help them achieve their ends. A nicely detailed depiction from this famous tale, with expressive figures and an interesting setting.
