Attacking a Korean Castle, 1872

Comments - Dramatic image of a group of samurai gathered atop a rocky ledge at right, having just pushed an enormous boulder down onto a Korean castle. The armored warriors peer over the edge of the precipitous cliff, watching intently as the stone lands on a tower of the fortress, sending pieces of masonry flying. Kato Kiyomasa watches at left, one of the three leaders of the Seven-Year War against Korea. He shields his eyes with his hand as he perches atop a rocky peak, gripping a spear with a white banner fluttering overhead. A fantastic image with the cliffs towering high above the mountainous landscape, and clouds drifting below softly shaded in different colors. A striking design, beautifully colored and detailed.

Artist - Kunichika (1835 - 1900)

Image Size - 14" x 28 1/2"

Condition - This print with good color and detail as shown. Three separate panels. Stitching holes at one side of each panel, a few wormholes, repaired. Slight toning and soiling, a few creases and marks, rubbing at edges. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
