Original Meiji era Japanese Woodblock Print
Wedding Ceremony of a Distinguished Couple, 1900

Comments - Handsome scene from the wedding ceremony of a distinguished couple at the Imperial Palace. This may be a depiction of the wedding of the Crown Prince Yoshihito marrying Kujo Sadako in May 1900. The royal couple sits on plus chairs in front of a cloth-covered table topped with a traditional wedding display featuring symbols of luck, longevity, and fidelity, including a bonsai pine, blossoming plum branches, a crane, and the elderly couple Jo and Uba. At right, attendants carry in trays with sake cups and a kettle, along with a long-handled sake server. Dignitaries in uniform sit on either side of the pair. An attractive historic subject, nicely detailed with burnishing in the black uniforms and the womens' hair.

Artist - Meiji era artist (unsigned)

Image Size - 14 1/8" x 27 3/4" + margins as shown

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Three separate panels. A few creases, slight soiling at edges. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
