Series; Mirror of the Loyal Courage of the Faithful Retainers, 1852

Ichikawa Danjuro VIII as Otaka Gengo Tadao - Great kabuki portrait of Ichikawa Danjuro VIII as the ronin Otaka Gengo Tadao in the classic drama about the 47 ronin, "Kanadehon Chushingura." He looks up with a sober expression, holding his spear upright with one hand. He wears the ronin's traditional black and white dogtooth bordered robe over a suit of armor, a white sash tied around his forehead. Behind him at upper left, samurai in silhouette clamber over a snowy hill with a torii gate at the base. A handsome design with fine line work in the hair. We've never before offered this subject.

Artist - Kuniyoshi (1797 - 1861)

Image Size - 13 3/4" x 9 5/8"

Condition - This print with excellent detail as shown. Small hole, a couple small thinning spots, repaired. Slight toning and soiling, a few stains and creases, slight rubbing at edges. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
