Meiji Emperor and Ladies of the Court Viewing Plum Blossoms at Night

Comments - Attractive scene of the Meiji Emperor and ladies of the court viewing plum blossoms from a verandah at night. In the foreground, three beauties wear the latest European fashions with bustled dresses, gloves, and hats decorated with ruffles, flowers, ribbons, and feathers. At right, an arched walkway or bridge leads to a lower level where the emperor sits at a cloth-covered table dressed in a military uniform. Plum trees covered with white flowers and buds frame the scene, with rolled up blinds and red patterned draperies at right. Beautiful detail in the clothing and setting, including burnishing in the black dress.
