Series; One Hundred Poems by One Hundred Poets, circa 1844 - 1845

One Hundred Poems by One Hundred Poets - Lovely design from Toyokuni III's series pairing beauties with Japan's famous "One Hundred Poems by One Hundred Poets," an anthology featuring classical verses. Each features a beauty in a scene from daily life, in one of two different formats. One style features a decorative shaded border running across the top of the page. The title cartouche takes the form of an open book, with a portrait of the featured poet on one page and the accompanying poem on the other page. The second format includes a text cartouche shaped like an unrolled scroll, with small rectangular insets featuring the poet's portrait and poem. A charming beauty series, nicely detailed.

Oe no Chisato, Poet No. 23 - Lovely image of a beauty holding a black court cap in her outstretched hand and a folding fan. She wears a long tan vest over her gray patterned kimono, the fabric trailing onto the floor around her feet. Her hair is pulled back into a sleek bun, and she looks down with a sweet smile. The verse by poet Oe no Chisato reads:

As I view the moon,
Many things come into my mind,
And my thoughts are sad;
Yet it's not for me alone,
That the autumn time has come.

An attractive design from this appealing series.
