Threatening a Beauty, 1880

Comments - Dramatic kabuki triptych showing the commoner Kinsuke, played by Ichikawa Sadanji, threatening the beauty Omura (Iwai Hanshiro) with a sword. He grabs her by the obi, holding the weapon behind his back, as she tugs on the fabric, struggling to break free. The policeman Sugita Kaoru, portrayed by Onoe Kikugoro, intervenes, scowling as he holds up a lantern with a flickering red flame. He wears a Western-style black uniform with gold buttons, his hair closely cropped. At left, Ichikawa Danjuro plays the poet Kusunoki Shakusai, wearing an unusual furry brown cap. The river spreads out behind them with a willow tree framing a view of the water and thatched-roof houses on the far shore. Beautifully detailed with burnishing in the uniform and lantern, and touches of metallic pigment.
