Blooming Peony Flowers, 1878 - Lovely scene from court life of the Meiji Empress and beauties in an elegant interior overlooking a garden filled with colorful peonies and cherry blossoms. The empress stands in the center wearing a purple kimono patterned with stylized birds. A woman kneeling at right holds a poem slip and a brush, looking up with a smile as she composes a verse, while the beauty behind her carries in a tray of refreshments. Wonderful detail in the patterns of the sumptuous fabrics and carpet, with vibrant color and delicate embossing in the white kimono trim. A charming subject.
