Unveiling of Buddhist Statue at Sengakuji, 1847 - 1852

Comments - Attractive scene of beauties and two young boys on the way to Sengakuji or Sengaku Temple for the unveiling of a Buddhist statue. The tombs of the famous 47 ronin are at Sengakuji, and the young boy at left wears a helmet with the ronin's traditional black and white dogtooth border and the inverted comma crest of Oboshi Yuranosuke, the leader of the ronin in the famous drama "Kanadehon Chushingura," a tale based on the true story of the ronin. The beauty holding his hand carries a miniature banner, smiling as she looks down at the child. At right, two women stroll along, each holding the end of a white towel between them. The site looks out across the ocean, with boats anchored near the shore and a tea stall at far right. An attractive design.
