Series; The ABCs of Education (Kyoiku iroha tango), 1897 - 1898

Hero of Kagoshima, 1877 - Bold portrait of soldier in battle at Kagoshima during the Satsuma Rebellion. He firmly stands his ground with his legs spread, gripping a spear, the wind whipping his hair above his head. Below, a rebel samurai sprawls on the ground, his mouth open as he shouts. The hero wears a black jacket tucked into violet pants, a red tie-dyed sash around his waist. Blood seeps through the bandage on his wounded arm, and his hat and sword lie on the ground below. Shots explode in the night sky as fighting continues in the background. The red title cartouche at upper right is framed by a tasseled cord attached to a horse's bit. A dramatic image from a series we've never before come across, with expressive figures and fine bokashi shading.
