Series; A Mirror of Strange Tales from China and Japan, 1880
Toki no Daishiro Wrestling with a Guardian King; Chinzei Hachiro Tametomo - Terrific uncut page from Yoshitoshi's rarely seen series "A Mirror of Strange Tales from China and Japan" featuring two chuban images. The top scene shows the warrior Toki no Daishiro wrestling with a fierce guardian deity, lunging forward with all his might as snakes encircle his leg and foot. At right, a ghostly gray figure grins and laughs as he watches the struggle. Below, the famous samurai and archer Tametomo kills a tengu, slicing the creature's head off with his sword while also cutting through the end of the rocky outcropping on which he stands. Part of the tengu's hairy body can be seen at right behind the blade of the sword. A waterfall rushes over the cliff at left, and a flaming torch rests on the ground behind Tametomo. These are both great designs that we have never before offered. A terrific choice for a samurai enthusiast or a Yoshitoshi collector.
