Male Prostitutes and Palace Maids

Comments - Interesting scene of young male prostitutes dressed as women, along with palace maids in an upstairs room. In the center, a kneeling young woman whispers into the ear of a maid, who wears a striped apron over her kimono. At right, a beauty tunes a shamisen while her companion takes a toothpick from her mouth. A low table before them holds a meal, including a platter of fish and sushi and a blue and white ceramic bowl. At lower left, an attendant carries a kettle down the steps while another woman chats with her from over the railing above. We've only seen this subject in reprint once before.
