Samurai Gathered at the Water's Edge

Comments - Great image of a group of samurai gathered at the water's edge as they prepare for battle. At right, a general with a horned helmet sits on a folding stool holding a black fan with a red sun on it, scowling angrily as a messenger on horseback rides up along the rocky shore at left. The enraged messenger whips his black horse with a riding crop as he gallops into the group. The samurai are dressed in full armor, carrying weapons and standards. The current of the water flows past in sinuous curves, and Mt. Fuji dominates the horizon beneath a darkening sky. Wonderfully detailed.

Artist - Yoshitora (active circa 1840 - 1880)

Image Size - 14 1/4" x 29 1/2" + margin as shown

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Three separate panels. Small losses at corners, a few small wormholes and holes, repaired. Slight toning, creasing, and soiling, rubbing at edges. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
