Scene from the 47 Ronin, 1851

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene from the "Kanadehon Chushingura," the drama about the 47 ronin. The beauty Okaru stands at left with a lacquer document box in her hand, smiling over her shoulder at Shikama Takubei, who waves his arms wildly as he kneels in the courtyard. At right, Lady Kaoyo, the widow of Lord Hangan, leans forward with an eager expression as she watches Takubei, who grimaces angrily. A bamboo fence encloses the garden, with a stone lantern and water basin among the autumn grasses and blossoms. From left, the actors are Bando Shuka I, Ichikawa Danjuro VIII, and Fujikawa Kayu III. The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, has this image in its collection. Nice expressive figures in a handsome setting.

Image Size - 13 1/2" x 28 3/4"
