The Battle of Awazu, 1854

Comments - Terrific scene from the Battle of Awazu, with the woman warrior Tomoe gozen at left wielding a pine tree as a weapon as she rides along, trampling enemies beneath her horse's hooves. In the center, Minamoto no Yoshinaka has been hit with an arrow while trying to free his horse from the bog where it had gotten stuck in the mud. At right, Wada Yoshimori reacts with angry shock as he realizes what has happened to his fellow samurai, flinging his hands out at his side. A dramatic depiction of this famous event, with fine detail in the expressive figures and armor, and an atmospheric night setting in the countryside.

Artist - Kuniyoshi (1797 - 1861)

Image Size - 29" x 14"

Condition - Three separate panels, not attached at seam, not backed. Very light old horizontal centerfold, flattened and not visible from front. Excellent color and fine detail. Very nice.
