Tanabata Festival, 1859

Comments - Lovely design of a beauty and a young girl celebrating the Tanabata or Star Festival. At lower left, the girl leans over a low table as she writes wishes on slips of colored paper to hang on leafy bamboo stalks, a traditional holiday decoration. The beauty smiles as she reaches up to attach a slip, a round lacquer tray at her feet holding additional papers with strings attached. She wears a colorful blue-violet tie-dyed kimono decorated with patterned stars, an appropriate motif for the festival. A softly shaded rosy border runs across the page, with blue at the top suggesting sky. A charming and colorful depiction of this holiday celebration.
