Hachisuka Koroku's Gang on Yahagi Bridge, 1888

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene from the life of the great Toyotomi Hideyoshi, who is regarded as Japan's second great unifier. As a child, Hiyoshimaru was sleeping one night on Yahagi Bridge, and he was awakened by Hachisuka Koruku and his gang of robbers, who tripped over him in the dark. Here, the robbers pause at the end of the bridge, leaning forward with sober expressions. The fellow at left wears a long fur vest over his suit of armor, and grips the rustic handle of a weapon. From left, the actors are Bando Kakitsu I, and Ichikawa Yaozo VII. Nice detail in the hair and fur, with bokashi shading in the night sky.

Artist - Chikanobu (1838 - 1912)

Image Size - 14 1/8" x 9 3/8" + margins as shown

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Slight toning, soiling, and creasing. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
