Clearing Weather of the Togakushi: Taira no Koremori Ason, 1868 - Terrific scene of the nobleman Taira no Koremochi preparing to vanquish the demon of Mt. Togakushi with his sword. While hunting deer in the hills outside Kyoto, Lord Koremochi ran into a party of beautiful women so he joined them in a picnic. Sleepy with wine, he dozed off, and dreamed of a messenger from the god of war warning him that one of the women was actually the demon Kiji, who intended to kill him. He awoke to find the hideous horned demon leering at him from behind the ornate drum at left. She clutches her long gray hair as she screams, gusts of wind sweeping across the sky and overturning an offering tray, food, and a sake kettle. Koremochi leans forward defiantly as he draws his sword from its scabbard. Two men cower on the ground at right, bowled over the by great wind, which sends maple leaves fluttering over them. A dynamic illustration of this legendary event, nicely detailed. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has this image in its collection.
