Original Toshimasa (active circa 1894) Japanese Woodblock Print
Attacking the Chinese

Comments - Dramatic battle scene from the Sino-Japanese War of the Japanese attacking the Chinese along the bank of a river. In the center, an officer on a rearing horse raises his sword above his head as a soldier in the water bayonets an enemy, who falls backwards into the river with a splash. At right, a Chinese soldier pleads for mercy with his hands clasped as a Japanese infantryman prepares to stab him with his bayonet. Behind him, a compatriot uses his gun as a club. Clouds of smoke billow upwards, and a full moon can barely be seen in the night sky. A lively illustration.
