A Fuji Arts special offer auction
Gen'i in Thought - The priest Gen'i sits in contemplation of the moon. Printed in the cartouche:
Usually I dislike a cloudy sky
Tonight I realize that a cloudy sky
Makes me appreciate the light of the moon
The high priest was an influential personal in the politically tumultuous 16th century Japan. Both politically astute and spiritually connected, Yoshitoshi depicts Gen'i during a quiet moment of thought. The moon is tucked behind the bamboo blinds, while the blue of the sky creates a soft tone over the print. Nicely detailed with burnishing in the black oil lamp stand and the edge of the verandah railing, and embossing in the white under robe.
Artist - Yoshitoshi (active circa 1840 - 1880)
Image Size - 13" x 8 3/4" + margins as shown
Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Backed with paper. Small loss at corner, small thinning spot, repaired with backing. Slight toning and soiling, offsetting, a couple small spots. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
