Confrontation at the End of a Bridge, 1867

Comments - Intriguing kabuki scene of a confrontation taking place at the end of a bridge. At right, a samurai grips a length of rope in one hand as raises an iron truncheon above his head to strike the fellow on the ground before him. His intended victim looks up at him with a wary frown, throwing his hand out in a defensive motion. At left, a man stands beside a palanquin, watching the attacker with a tightlipped frown as he reaches for his sword. A willow trees frames the night sky above. A handsome design with expressive figures in an interesting setting.
