Picture of the Naval Battle near Pungdo in Korea, 1894

Comments - Striking scene from the Sino-Japanese War of the naval battle near Phung-to in Korea. An explosion rocks a Chinese ship, sending up clouds of orange and red smoke and flames, showering burning embers down over the water. The crew makes its escape in several smaller boats, landing on the rocky shore at left. On the horizon at right, other explosions can be seen as the battle continues. A dramatic image set against the deep blue night sky, with a crescent moon glowing high above and shimmering reflections on the water. A beautiful Kiyochika design, also in the collection of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts.
