Beauties Raising Silkworms, 1891

Comments - Fantastic triptych of beauties engaged in the process of raising silkworms. At right, two women use feathers to carefully brush the silkworms onto trays. In the center, a woman strips mulberry leaves off the branches, filling a basket which is passed onto the beauty at right, who chops the leaves on a cutting board. A woman behind her scatters the leaves to feed the caterpillars. Trays of silkworms are stacked on a rack nearby. In the last stage of the process, beauties at upper left boil the cocoons to extract the silk thread, which is wound onto a spool. Nicely detailed with lively color. A wonderful look at this traditional activity, covering all stages in the lengthy process.
