Series; Stories of Famous Japanese Women

Stories of Famous Japanese Women - In 1893, Chikanobu began work on a series of diptychs depicting scenes from the lives of famous Japanese women. His "Stories of Famous Japanese Women" included women from various time periods as well as mythological heroines, highlighting their dramatic deeds or personal virtues. These intriguing subjects are beautifully drawn with Chikanobu's characteristic fine line work, and lovely soft shading. A rare and wonderful series and a great choice for a collector.

Mother of Zen Master Ikkyu - Interesting scene of the mother of the Zen master Ikkyu at the palace of the Emperor GoKomatsu. The emperor was in love with the sixteen-year-old beauty, but she had ties to the former Southern court, so when she became pregnant with his child, other ladies-in-waiting raised questions about her loyalty. Here, the ladies have supposedly discovered a knife which was hidden in the beauty's sleeve. She reacts with dismay, protesting her innocence as she waves her sleeves. The emperor looks on soberly from behind the fine reed blind at right. In spite of her protestations, the beauty was removed from the palace, and her child was born outside the palace, unrecognized by the emperor. He grew up to be the famous Zen Buddhist master Ikkyu. An intriguing illustration, with beautiful rich color, fine embossing on the white kimono, and burnishing on the black lacquer step.
