The Chrysanthemum Garden, 1849

Comments - Handsome depiction of the "Chrysanthemum Garden" scene from the kabuki play "Kiichi Hogen sanryaku no maki." The young samurai Torazo kneels before the elderly Heike warrior Kiichi Hogen, who sits on the edge of a verandah. Torazo is actually Ushiwakamaru (the future Minamoto no Yoshitsune) attempting to steal Kiichi Hogen's books of secret strategies while serving him as a footman. The young man smiles as he leans on one knee, his kimono patterned with a design of paulownia flowers and leaves. The elder gestures angrily with a feather fan above his head, his gray hair flowing around his face. From left, the actors are Bando Shuka I Nakamura Utaemon IV. An intriguing scene with expressive figures and nicely detailed setting.
