Series; Today's Elegant Manners and Customs
Playing Hanetsuki, 1894 - Charming image of beauties and young girls playing hanetsuki, a game similar to badminton that is traditionally enjoyed at New Year's. They use decorative battledores called hagoita to send a feathered shuttlecock back and forth. The woman in the center holds her paddle out, watching as a shuttlecock seems to hang in mid-air overhead. Her kimono is shaded from pale lavender to white, bordered with grapes, vines, and wasps. Her fellow player at left wears a red robe edge with pine branches and plum blossoms. An attractive holiday subject, beautifully detailed with burnishing in the hair, black obi, and black clogs, and touches of silver metallic pigment on two of the hair ornaments
