Struggling over a Sash, 1853

Comments - Interesting scene of characters struggling over a sash in an overgrown courtyard at night. At left, a nobleman holds one end of the red brocade obi, looking up with a worried frown. He wears a handsome tunic over full pants, and tall wooden geta clogs, an umbrella over his shoulder. At right, a man sprawls on the ground with his chin caught on the sash, waving his sword above his head. His light blue under robe features a dragon, and his black loincloth is trimmed with fridge. Behind him, ivy grows over a rotting garden fence and a frayed reed blind can be seen at upper right. From left, the actors are Ichikawa Danjuro VIII and Nakamura Tsuruzu I. Nice detail in the setting, with embossing in the fringed sash tied around the nobleman's waist.
