Original Toshinobu (1857 - 1886) Japanese Woodblock Print
Set of Famous Japanese, 1877

Comments - Handsome print depicting some of Japan's famous figures. At upper right, a samurai wearing full armor and a horned battle helmet with a white wig grips a bow and a tasseled command baton. At upper left, a nobleman in formal court dress sits on a low platform, a staff of office in his hand. This is an unusual "creped" print, known in Japanese as "chirimen-gami-e." A mechanical process adds a crinkled texture to the woodblock print, which also reduces the size. Creped prints were something of a novelty during the Meiji era, and were most commonly used for children's books.

Artist - Toshinobu (1857 - 1886)

Image Size - 8 1/4" x 12 5/8"

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Two separate panels. Remnants of paper hinge mounts on reverse at corners. C-shaped tear, repaired. A few creases at edges. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
