Toyonobu (1711 - 1785) Japanese Woodblock Reprint
Beauty Writing a Letter

Goyo Studio Reprints - Hashiguchi Goyo is the undisputed master of the 20th century shin-hanga movement. A secondary part of his career was reprinting beautiful old ukiyo-e designs from the golden age of the Japanese woodblock print. Between 1918 and 1920, much of Goyo’s artistic work was devoted to creating these incredible woodblock reprints of classic ukiyo-e prints. Each image was painstakingly copied from an original and stamped with the Goyo circular seal. Line by line, color by color, the prints were recreated in Goyo’s studio to perfectly emulate these masterworks of ukiyo-e. Goyo took pride in this work and the release of his reprints was met with great acclaim.

Today, original Goyo reprints are highly sought after by collectors and rare to find. This is an exceptional opportunity!

Comments - Charming pillar print of a beauty writing a letter, a brush in hand as she rests the sheet of paper over her knee. She wears a kimono with interesting blocks of different designs, including flowers, birds above waves, and plum blossoms against black, tied with a checked obi. A writing set lies on the floor alongside a roll of paper. This design has been hand colored, like the original. A nice design from the early years of color woodblock prints.

Artist - Toyonobu (1711 - 1785)

Image Size - 16 1/8" x 3"

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. A few light creases. Please note: folded by publisher for storage, will be shipped folded. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
