The Subscription List, 1856

Comments - Terrific scene from the popular kabuki play "The Subscription List" (Kanjincho) of Benkei reading a fake list of subscribers to a temple restoration fund to the daimyo Togashi Saemon. Minamoto no Yoshitsune and his men were attempting to sneak across the border dressed as yamabushi or mountain priests when Togashi stopped them. Suspicious of the young porter, who resembled (and actually was) Yoshitsune, Togashi demanded an explanation. The quick-thinking Benkei grabbed a blank scroll and began making up a list to divert suspicion. He stands on a rocky path in front of the nobleman, Yoshitsune bowing deeply on the ground behind him, the other men gathered around the entrance to the courtyard at right. A great depiction from this classic tale, with wonderful detail and an interesting setting and composition.
