Series; Personalities of Recent Times

Ichikawa Danjuro IX as Benkei in Kanjincho, 1887 - Terrific portrait of Ichikawa Danjuro IX in the role of Benkei from the popular kabuki play "The Subscription List." Disguised as a yamabushi or mountain priest, Benkei angrily snatches away the scroll containing the alleged subscription list. He scowls as he looks over his shoulder, a small black cap tied to his head with a braided white cord. He wears a black coat over his kimono, which is trimmed with two fluffy pompoms. Wonderful embossed detail in the braided cord and pompoms and the inset above. A fine expressive image with a bold composition.

Artist - Yoshitoshi (1839 - 1892)

Image Size - 8 3/4" x 13" + margins as shown

Condition - With excellent color and detail. Backed with old paper. A couple of light creases in subject. Some light soiling. Please see photos for details. Nice overall.
