Comments - Dramatic depiction of Minamoto no Yoritomo's attack on the Shirakawa Palace during the Hogen Rebellion. The palace was defended by Yoritomo's father, Minamoto no Tameyoshi, and his brother, the legendary archer Minamoto no Tametomo. At right, Tametomo has just fired an arrow as he gallops along on a black horse. In the center, a samurai gripping a large iron club faces an opponent with a sword. The fighting continues all around them on horseback and on foot, with troops seen dark gray silhouette in the distance. At right, flames and smoke swirl up into the night sky from the burning palace. A lively scene with expressive figures and wonderful detailed in the armor and weapons.
