Attacking a Monk, 1857

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene of a commoner attacking a monk, grabbing him by the collar and forcing him to his knees, a large knife in his hand. The beauty at left leans forward with an eager smile, encouraging the man to attack. A samurai emerges from the bushes outside, frowning unhappily. Flames rise from a small fire of burning pine sprigs in the center of the room, and a household shrine is set up in a niche in the wall. The home is shabby and in disrepair, with cracked plaster and torn shoji windows. In the left panel, Onoe Kikugoro IV plays Okiku. A fascinating subject with expressive figures and wonderful detail in the setting.
