Ichikawa Kuzo II as Teraoka Heiemon and Onoe Baiko IV as Okaru, 1849

Comments - Interesting double portrait from the kabuki play "Kanadehon Chushingura," the classic drama. Onoe Baiko IV appears as the courtesan Okaru, grinning slyly up at her older brother, Teraoka Heiemon, played by Ichikawa Kuzo II. She holds a sheaf of paper and a brush, ready to write a letter. Heiemon bites his lower lip, grimacing because Oboshi Yuranosuke, the leader of the ronin, has caught Okaru spying trying to read a secret message to Yuranosuke about the vendetta. Nice expressive figures.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 14 1/4" x 9 5/8"

Condition - This print with excellent detail as shown. Slight separation along vertical centerfold, a few small holes, repaired. Slight soiling, a few creases and small stains. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
