The 47 Ronin, Act 5: The Yamazaki Highway, 1857

Comments - Dramatic scene from Act 5 of the "Kanadehon Chushingura." At left, the evil Sadakuro prepares to kill the elderly Yoichibei after robbing him one night on the Yamazaki Highway. The poor man pleads for his life, waving his arm as the thief grimaces, gripping his sword with both hands. At right, Kampei, who has been out hunting encounters a member of the vendetta. Both men wear straw raincoats, and Kampei holds a gun against his shoulder as rain begins to fall. Nice expressive figures in a handsome night setting.
