Comments - Fantastic Yoshitoshi triptych showing a group of some of the greatest thieves of Japan, each carefully identified with a name cartouche across the top. At right, a magician in a gray robe sits with his hands clasped, an enormous toad perched on his head. An angry-looking samurai beside him holds a lantern above his head, scowling. At bottom center, a young nobleman leans on an ornately carved armrest, huddled under a robe with a glum expression. In the center panel at upper left, a samurai wipes the blade of his knife with a white cloth. At left, a bearded man wearing a black fur vest folds his arm across his chest. A terrific group portrait with expressive faces and vibrant coloring. Includes a burnished pattern on the black robe of the central figure, and embossing and oxidized silver pigment on the white cowl of the warrior monk at lower right. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has this image in its collection.
