Ide Gakusui - Gakusui initially studied Japanese style painting. In 1929, he moved to China, and returned to Japan after World War II ended. He began designing kacho-e (birds and flowers prints) for Watanabe in the late 1940s. His realistic works are beautifully rendered, with lively color and fine bokashi shading. Some include embossed detail in the feathers of the birds. He is best known for his spectacular designs of herons and cranes. His attractive shin-hanga prints are great to collect or display.
