Series; Mirror of Good and Evil Spirits

Sawamura Tanosuke III as Kishin Omatsu, 1868 - Terrific kabuki portrait of Sawamura Tanosuke III as the evil Kishin Omatsu from a rarely seen Kunichika series depicting good and evil people. She shines a lantern up into the dark night sky, smiling slightly as she leans back, delicately holding an arrow in her other hand, smiling slightly as she leans back, following the path of the lantern light with her eyes. Her long hair is pulled back into a low ponytail tied with a hank of yarn, trailing over her shoulder. She wears a deep purple kimono with a bold white blossom pattern, and has a sword tucked at her side. A fine expressive figure with wonderful detail in the hairstyle and soft shading in the dark sky. The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, has this image in its collection.
