Seated Man with Magic Foxes, 1867 - Fascinating kabuki scene of magic foxes taking part in a ceremony, capering around an elderly man, who sits on a cushion in front of a household shrine. His hands clasped before him beneath his outer blue robe, he looks ahead quietly. At upper right, a fox dances about the old man, waving its paws in the air, and below, another animal looks to him for direction, holding a parcel to pass out. An intriguing supernatural subject, with the animals doing the bidding of the wizened, white-haired man.
