Motome and Shop Apprentice, 1849

Comments - Interesting illustration of the "Sugi Sakaya" scene of the kabuki play "Imoseyama Onna Teikin." From left, the actors are Ichikawa Kuzo II as Netaro and Sawamura Chojuro V as Motome. Omiwa, the daughter of the proprietor of the Sugi Sakaya sake shop, is in love with Motome. She asks the shop apprentice, Netaro, to bring him to her. At left, Netaro pushes a reluctant Motome through the doorway. He frowns angrily as he scratched his head, dressed in a black kimono bordered with blue and yellow blossoms. Above, loops of red and white thread symbolize a firm pledge of love between the young couple, placed there by the hopeful Omiwa. Nice expressive figures.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 14" x 9 1/2"

Condition - This print with excellent detail as shown. Backed with paper. Slight toning and soiling, a few creases, slight rubbing at edges. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
