Toyonobu (1711 - 1785) Japanese Woodblock Reprint
Sanogawa Ichimatsu I as Hisamatsu

Goyo Studio Reprints - Hashiguchi Goyo is the undisputed master of the 20th century shin-hanga movement. A secondary part of his career was reprinting beautiful old ukiyo-e designs from the golden age of the Japanese woodblock print. Between 1918 and 1920, much of Goyo’s artistic work was devoted to creating these incredible woodblock reprints of classic ukiyo-e prints. Each image was painstakingly copied from an original and stamped with the Goyo circular seal. Line by line, color by color, the prints were recreated in Goyo’s studio to perfectly emulate these masterworks of ukiyo-e. Goyo took pride in this work and the release of his reprints was met with great acclaim.

Today, original Goyo reprints are highly sought after by collectors and rare to find. This is an exceptional opportunity!

Comments - Handsome kabuki portrait of Sanogawa Ichimatsu I as the young beauty Hisamatsu. She looks over her shoulder with a sweetly sly expression, a lover letter in her hand hidden beneath her sleeve. She wears a black and brown plaid coat over a white kimono with colorful plum blossoms, gourds, and jars. This design has been hand colored, like the original. An attractive image.
