Fireman with a Standard, 1871

Series; Flowers of Tokyo (Set of Fireman's Standards)

Fireman with a Standard, 1871 - Dynamic image of a kabuki actor portraying a fireman, carrying a fringed brigade standard called a matoi with both hands. He looks ahead with wide eyes, the fringe trailing over his shoulders and back. His blue and gray kimono has been pushed down to the waist, revealing a black undergarment that shows off his extensive upper body tattoo, which features a beauty in exotic dress shielding her eyes with her hand as she looks up. Nicely detailed with fine line work in the hair and soft pink shading around the eyes. A handsome composition.

Artist - Kunichika (1835 - 1900)

Image Size - 14 1/8" x 9 5/8 + top margin as shown

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Stitching holes at side, repaired. Slight toning and soiling, a few creases, stain. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
