Sawamura Chojuro V as Fujiya Izaemon and Onoe Baiko IV as Yugiri of the Ogiya, 1850

Comments - Attractive kabuki scene from the play "Kuruwa Bunsho" showing Fujiya Izaemon watching his sweetheart, the courtesan Yugiri of the Ogiya, through a doorway. Disinherited by his family because of his love for her, Izaemon has been wandering the streets, jealous of her other clients. After learning that the beauty has made herself ill pining away for him, he decides to pay her a visit. Here, he stands outside, lifting his woven hat to look in on the pensive beauty. She looks down with a sad expression, holding a pipe. She wears a lovely blue outer robe patterned with fans and yellow swirls over a red floral kimono trimmed with blue and white checks. A niche at upper right holds a hand drum and an elegant black lacquer box. From the left, the actors are Sawamura Chojuro V and Onoe Baiko IV. A charming image with expressive figures and a nicely detailed setting.
