Courtesan Strolling through the Yoshiwara, 1859

Comments - Lovely scene of an elegantly dressed courtesan strolling through the Yoshiwara in springtime, accompanied by many attendants. She wears a red outer kimono patterned with a turtle among splashing waves, tied with a black obi featuring a dragon and swirling clouds. A servant holds an umbrella high above her head, while another leads the way carrying a large lantern. Two young kamuro or child apprentices flank her, each dressed in attire matching her own. A low fenced garden behind him is filled with yellow flowering shrubs and cherry trees covered with pale pink and white blossoms. Tea houses and shops line the street along the left side. An attractive design, nicely detailed with embossing in the white kimono trim.
