Series; Stories of Courageous Generals of the Provinces of Echigo and Kai, circa 1848 - 1849

Stories of Courageous Generals of the Provinces of Echigo and Kai - During the mid-1500s, the rival daimyo Takeda Shingen of Kai Province and Uesugi Kenshin of Echigo Province fought five famous battles on the plain of Kawanakajima. For this circa 1848 - 1849 series, Kuniyoshi presents bold portraits of samurai from both sides, with each general's affiliation indicated by a subtitle in the main cartouche that reads either "Twenty-four Generals of the Takeda Clan" or "Twenty-four Generals of the Uesugi Clan." Warriors are shown in dramatic poses in the midst of battle, or in quieter moments just before or after a fight. These great designs feature expressive figures, wonderful detail in the armor and weapons, and creative compositions. Prints from this Kuniyoshi series are rarely seen on the market, and are a fine complement to the artist's more well-known warrior series.
