Series; Calendar of Eastern Customs

Calendar of Eastern Customs - Published in 1890, Chikanobu's lovely "Calendar of Eastern Customs" series presents a beauty portrait for each month of the year, with women taking part in seasonal activities and annual celebrations. Subjects include a beauty preparing a display for the Doll Festival in the third month, a mother and her young son watching falling maple leaves in the tenth month, and a woman at Asakusa for the Year-end Fair in the twelfth month. Detailed with fine line work in the hair and soft shading, some prints also include deluxe printing techniques such as burnishing or embossing. We rarely see designs from this beautiful series, and we've never before come across a complete set. A wonderful choice for a collector and a fine complement to Chikanobu's more commonly seen series.
