Spirit of the Cherry Tree, 1891

Comments - Dramatic scene from the kabuki play commonly known as "Seki no To." The drama tells the story of the barrier guard Sekibei, who tries to chop down a blossoming cherry tree while drunk. He is suddenly confronted by the beautiful courtesan Sumizome, who is actually the spirit of the cherry tree ready to do battle with him. He reacts with alarm, staring at her in disbelief as she stands in front of the hollow opening of the tree. Sekibei grips a giant axe with a rustic wood handle, the blade emblazoned with flames. At right, the nobleman Munesada and his fiance watch from his house. Nicely detailed with a beautiful burnished pattern on Sekibei's black robe and embossing on the white trim. A terrific design with large expressive characters.
