Samurai with a Gun, 1890

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene of a samurai pointing at gun at a nobleman. The assailant stands at right, glaring at his enemy as he extends the gun from beneath his kimono. He wears a red kamishimo with a striking pattern of dragons and clouds. In the center, the nobleman holds up his fan to deflect the shot, while the warrior at lower left recoils in alarm, lifting his hat above his head. The left panel features Onoe Kikugoro V and Bando Shucho II as Takatsuna's wife Kagaribi. The center panel includes Ichikawa Danjuro IX as Asano Takamasa and Takasagoya Fukusuke as Moritsuna's elderly mother. Nice colorful figures set off by a deep blue background, detailed with embossing in the white hair and the nobleman's white kimono trim.
